David Weisman '98, who reached the second round of the NCAA singles championship in 1997, put together a season for the ages as a senior in 1998. He went 19-0 in dual-match play, which included winning five matches in three days to claim the program's first individual national championship.
After cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Doug Gregoire of Sewanee in the opening round, Weisman dispatched third-seeded Chad Moser of Illinois Wesleyan in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. Following a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Thomas Oechel of UC Santa Cruz, he dropped just his second set of the season before rallying to defeat second-seeded Jenia Karimov of California Lutheran, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the title match. Weisman cruised to victory in the final dropping just three games on the way to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Steve Nasson of Kalamazoo.
A two-time New England champion and the only All-America selection in the history of the program, Weismann is one of just five players from a New England institution to capture the Division III singles title. A four-year member of the men's ice hockey program, Weisman amassed 24 goals and 46 assists for 70 points, and was inducted into Babson's Hall of Fame in 2004.
