Buoyed by the return of five of its top six scorers and Kevin Bryant, the outstanding defensive player of the 1979 NCAA Tournament, Babson’s 1980 men’s soccer team took everyone’s best shot on the way to becoming the first Division III program to win consecutive national titles.
Head coach Bill Rogers ’73 added future Babson Hall of Famers Mark McNabb and Rodolph Von Berg to an already talented roster, but the Beavers were forced to overcome two straight one-goal losses at the end of the regular season.
The Green and White defeated Westfield State and avenged a regular season loss to Brandeis, both in overtime, before edging Binghamton in the national quarterfinals.
In an NCAA Final Four played at Babson, the Beavers needed four overtimes to oust Glassboro State in the semifinals, and then edged Scranton 1-0 in double overtime on John Sisk’s 104th-minute goal to become the first host school in Division III history to raise the Walnut and Brozne.
