Under the direction of first-year head coach Rob Riley, men’s ice hockey became the College’s second program to win a national championship with a historic 1983-84 campaign.
Led by future Babson Hall of Famers Paul Donato, Keith Houghton and Fran Murray, the Beavers reached the NCAA Frozen Four for the second winter in a row while setting school records that still stand with 27 wins and 184 goals scored.
Donato, a Hobey Baker Award finalist in 1984, set Babson single-single season records for assists and points, as the Green and White defeated Salem State, Norwich and Bowdoin to capture its first ECAC Tournament championship.
In the NCAA Tournament, the Beavers outlasted New England College in a hard-fought two-game series before outscoring Augsburg and Union 15-2 at the Frozen Four. Houghton recorded his second shutout of the year in the national title game, an 8-0 victory over the Dutchmen.
