BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) finished the day with six hits and first-year
Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) recorded her first career shutout to help Babson College sweep visiting Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Beavers blanked the Blue 5-0 in the opener and then took advantage of a five-run first inning to win game two 9-5. Babson, which has won its last six league games, improves to 19-19 overall and 11-7 in the conference while clinching a spot in next week's tournament. Wellesley has dropped three straight games to slip to 18-13 overall and 9-9 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Babson 5, Wellesley 0
Skivo was 4-for-4, senior
Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and sophomore
Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) doubled as part of a three-hit day and drove in a run to lead the Beavers' 17-hit attack. Juniors
Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) and
Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) added two hits apiece in support of Topel, who improved to 6-5 on the year by scattering seven hits and striking out five in the shutout victory.
Senior Chiara Lundin (Piedmont, Calif.) and juniors Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) and Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) all finished with two hits for the Blue. Junior Jill Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) was tagged with the loss to fall to 6-3 on the year after striking out four and giving up four runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings of work.
The Green and White, which stranded a pair of runners in the first, got an RBI single from Cubberly in the second and extended its lead to 4-0 with a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore
Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) brought home junior
Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) with a base hit to center that chased Coglan, and DeCampello and Raymond followed with back-to-back two-out singles back up the middle.
The Beavers kept it going in the fifth as senior
Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Skivo opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Cubberly followed with her third knock of the day, an RBI single to left center, to extend the margin to 5-0. Wellesley stranded six runners over the first three frames before Topel settled in. She retired the side in order in the fourth, got a double play to end the six and worked a one-two-three ninth to finish off her first career shutout.
Game 2: Babson 9, Wellesley 5
McCall went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Skivo doubled twice, junior
Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) doubled, walked three times and scored three runs, and Raymond went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to pace the Beavers. Sealey also knocked in three runs in support of junior
Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.), who won her third consecutive start to improve to 6-9 on the year.
First-year Brooklyn Awad (Montclair, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Rodriguez and sophomore Brynne Mellady (Marriottsville, Md.) both finished with two hits for the Blue. Junior pitcher Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) dropped to 4-7 with the loss after giving up five first-inning runs.
Despite the benefit of just one hit, Babson took advantage of three walks and two hit batsmen during a five-run first inning. DiCampello worked a five-pitch walk to bring home Walsh with the first run, DeLong scored when Raymond was plunked and Sealey then raced home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Wicker stopped the bleeding recording back-to-back outs, but McCall smacked a double to the gap in right center that brought home both DiCampello and Raymond for a 5-0 advantage.
Walsh led off the second with a double off the wall in right and later scored on an error, and McCall answered Awad's RBI single in the top of the third with one of her own in the third to keep the Beavers in front 7-1. Mellady singled and scored to cut the Wellesley deficit to five in the fourth, but the Green and White got a two-out, two-run single through the right side from Sealey with the bases loaded in the last of the fifth to stretch its cushion to 9-2.
The Blue scored once in the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh before Vlacich retired the final two batters she faced to close out the victory.
Both teams conclude the regular season with doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday as Babson travels to Springfield, while Wellesley hosts Smith.
