BABSON PARK, Mass.— The University of Massachusetts Boston came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the opener and junior Lauryn Meade (Hanson, Mass.) tossed a one-hit, five inning shutout in the nightcap as the Beacons swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Babson College Tuesday afternoon at chilly Alumni Field.
The Beacons rallied to take the opener, 4-3, and followed it up with a 10-0 triumph in the nightcap. With the victories, UMass Boston has won three in a row to improve to 13-5 overall, while the Beavers have lost their last four games to slide to 9-13.
Game 1 – UMass Boston 4, Babson 3
Junior
Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) went 2-for-4 and first-year
Izzy Burgess (Royersford, Pa.), had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Beavers. Junior
Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) drove in a run and classmate
Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.). reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Sealey went the distance in the circle and took her first loss (2-1), giving up just one earned run on 10 hits and three walks.
Senior Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) had three hits and drove in a run to lead the Beacons, while junior Ella Delisle (Amesbury, Mass.) had two hits including a double and sophomore Mary Matthews (Wilsonville, Ore.) cracked a double and knocked in a pair. Senior Sofie Richland (Burlington, Vt.) and first-year Liv Wentworth (Fitchburg, Mass.) also had extra-base hits and senior Lexus McIntosh (Lancaster, N.H.) allowed six hits, one walk and no earned runs in the circle to improve her record to 6-2.
The Green and White took advantage of a pair of errors in the second inning to push across three runs. Burgess sliced a doubled to left to bring home sophomore
Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) with the first run, Madia followed with an RBI ground out and Burgess raced home on a two-out throwing error to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
Delisle and Richland both doubled in the top of the third but first-year
Charly Landow (Wayne, Pa.) gunned down a runner at the plate for the second out and Sealey escaped a bases-loaded jam unscathed with a long fly ball to right field. UMass Boston, which cut its deficit to 3-1 on an RBI single by Rodriguez in the fourth, stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings before tying the game on a two-run double by Matthews with one out in the sixth.
The Beacons pushed across the go-ahead run on a two-out error in the top of the seventh and McIntosh worked out of trouble in the bottom of the inning getting a game-ending ground out after hitting a batter and giving up a single to Sealey with two outs.
Game 2 – UMass Boston 10, Babson 0 (5 innings)
Meade was outstanding for the Beacons and took a perfect game into the fifth inning. She hit junior
Mia Hansen (Natick, Mass.) to lead off the inning before inducing a double-play grounder, but Burgess broke up the no-hitter with a two-out bloop single over the third baseman's head. Sophomore
Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) reached base on an infield error to put two runners on but Meade struck out her fifth batter of the game to close out the win.
The Beacons offense, meanwhile, scored 10 runs on 11 hits, including a double by Delisle, a triple by junior Mya Perron (Beverly, Mass.) and a three-run home run by senior Lauren Miner (Millbury, Mass.). Matthews finished with three hits and two RBI, Miner had two hits, and Perron, junior Hayley Krockta (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Izzy Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) all drove in a run.
UMB scored at least one run in all five innings, beginning with Matthews coming home on a wild pitch in the first frame. Matthews delivered an RBI single in the second inning and Miner followed with her fifth home run of the season with right field with two runners on to make it 5-0 by the end of the second inning.
Levasseur hit an RBI single up the middle in the third inning before Krockta ripped an RBI single down the left field line in the fourth. Perron followed with an RBI triple to right and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0, and Matthews capped the UMB scoring with an RBI single in the fifth.
