No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short vs. Bowdoin, 10-9

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Mya Imaeda (Guilford, Conn.) scored three goals and added an assist and junior Grace Harvey (North Ferrisburgh, Vt.) grabbed 10 draw controls and four ground balls on top of causing three turnovers as Bowdoin College nipped Babson College, 10-9, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, Bowdoin improves to 5-8 overall, including 5-0 against non-conference opponents, while Babson dropped its second game in a row and slid to 7-6 overall.

Senior Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) led the Beavers with four points on a goal and three assists while sophomore Courtney Laden (Wilmette, Ill.) and first-year Grace Rooney (Milton, Mass.) scored two goals apiece. First-year Margaux Boneu (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished with a goal and an assist, sophomore Charleigh Newman (Woodbury, Conn.) caused two turnovers and scooped up a team-high four ground balls, and junior Morgan McGahan (Ho Ho Kus, N.J.) made a career-high 11 saves in the Beaver goal in the setback.

First-year Grace Schorr (Sammamish, Wash.) chipped in with two goals for the Polar Bears, sophomore Katie Athanasoulas (Concord, Mass.) grabbed three draw controls and three ground balls, and sophomore Hannah Rubin (Manhasset, N.Y.) and first-year Alex Genua (Berkley Heights, N.J.) combined for six saves in the Bowdoin goal in the victory.

After Bowdoin sophomore Mara Muse (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Babson first-year Jenna Wong (Walpole, Mass.) traded goals in the first three minutes, the Polar Bears pulled ahead with three straight goals by sophomore Sydney Lennard (Seattle, Wash.), Schorr and senior Ellie Fabbro (Hingham, Mass.). Rooney got one back for the Beavers to cut the margin to 4-2 after the opening frame.

Laden and Imaeda alternated four goals for the only scoring in the second quarter as the visitors held a 6-4 lead at the intermission. Boneu and senior Tatum Sands (East Dorset, Vt.) notched a pair of woman-up goals for the Beavers in the third quarter, each time to get to within one goal of the lead, but Harvey and Imaeda answered each time to keep the Polar Bears in front. Schorr added her second of the game with one second remaining to give the visitors a 9-6 margin heading into the fourth quarter.

Babson attempted a comeback as Bedard set up sophomore Lauren Caley (Beverly, Mass.) for a goal and Bedard scored one of her own with 9:39 remaining to climb back to within a goal at 9-8. Junior Annie Bermingham (Amherst, N.H.) tallied the final goal for Bowdoin to make it 10-8 but the Beavers wouldn't go down quietly. Rooney scored with 11 seconds remaining to make it 10-9, but Harvey won the ensuing draw for Bowdoin and ran out the clock.

Bowdoin finished with a 27-1 advantage in shots, a 14-11 margin in ground balls and a decisive 15-6 lead in Draw controls. The Polar Bears were also 6-for-10 on free position shots while Babson was just 1-of-4.

The Beavers are right back in action on Wednesday with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against Salve Regina at 4 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Bowdoin returns home for its final two regular-season games, beginning Saturday against Connecticut College at 12 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is 2-9 all-time against Bowdoin in a series that dates back to 1994, although the two games between the teams the past two years are the first meetings since 2011.
• The Beavers have played four games this year that have been decided by either one or two goals, going 2-2 in those four.
• Bedard has at least two points in 12 of her 13 games this spring and Wong has at least one point in all 13 outings.
