Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Framingham State

Vlacich and Sealey Combine for Three-Hit Shutout in Nightcap

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) had four hits and three runs batted in on the day, and juniors Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) and Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) combined on a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as Babson College swept Framingham State University in a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Beavers took the opener, 5-2, and came back with a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap. With the victories, Babson has won three of its last four games to even its record at 9-9 overall, while Framingham State, which had won four of its last five, dropped to 5-11 on the season.

Game 1 – Babson 5, Framingham State 2

DiCampello went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Beavers. Classmate Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) added two hits and Sealey and fellow junior Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va,) each drove in a run. First-year pitcher Anna Ziccardi (Metuchen, N.J.) worked four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-1 in the circle, allowing just four hits while striking out two. First-year Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) pitched the first three innings, giving up just two runs on three hits while fanning four.

Junior Eliza Carignan (Epsom, N.H.) had two hits to lead the Rams while sophomore Ava Gray (Danvers, Mass.) had a double and an RBI and classmate Jocelyn Pepe (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) had a single and an RBI. Sophomores Bella McDonald (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Mikayla Yuricheck (Summit Hill, Pa.) both reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Junior Peyton Farris (El Paso, Texas) pitched four strong innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three, coming on in place of sophomore starter Audrey Gauthier (Dexter, Mich.), who took the loss after being touched for four tuns on three hits with one strikeout.

The Rams struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning. After sophomore Ellie Etemad-Gilbertson (Boston, Mass.) singled and MacDonald walked to put two runners on, Gray ripped an RBI double to plate MacDonald, and Gray later scored on Pepe's single to center.

The Beavers answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. They loaded the bases when sophomore Kay LaLiberty (Lowell, Mass.) walked, junior Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and DeLong reached on a bunt single, and the first run came home on a walk to Sealey. DiCampello followed with a two-run single through the left side, and a fielder's choice by McCall plated Sealey to cap the rally.

Babson added an insurance run in the fifth inning when DiCampello led off with a double down the left field line, and first-year pinch runner Izzy Burgess (Royersford, Pa.) came around to score on a ground out and a wild pitch.

Game 2 –  Babson 3, Framingham State 0

DiCampello had two hits and an RBI in the second game as well. McCall and junior Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) each had a hit and an RBI, and Burgess belted a double to left center in the fourth inning for her first career hit.

Vlacich was terrific in the circle for the Beavers, allowing just three hits and two walks in six-plus innings while striking out six batters. She took a one-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a pair of hits, but Sealey came on with the tying run at the plate and retired three straight batters to strand the runners and close out her third save of the season.

Babson pounced early with three runs in the first inning. After Walsh walked to lead off and DeLong was hit by a pitch, DiCampello singled down the left field line to plate Walsh. Raymond and McCall both followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0 after one.

Vlacich was perfect through three inning before MacDonald singled up the middle with one out in the fourth inning. Vlacich got the next two batters on a groundout and a fly out. The Rams put a runner on base with a walk in the fifth and sixth innings, but both times, Vlacich snuffed out the threat with a strikeout to end the inning.

Gray led off the Framingham seventh inning with a single up the middle and Pepe followed with a double to right center. Sealey moved over from her first base position and retired the next three batters to finish off the shutout.

Babson will host MIT in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. Framingham State returns home to host Bridgewater State in a MASCAC twinbill on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
