Softball Swept by Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine—The Babson College softball team was swept by Bates College in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Pickard Softball Diamond on the campus of Bowdoin College.

The Beavers dropped the opener 6-2 before falling 2-1 to the Bobcats in game two. Babson, which entered the day having won two straight games, slips to 6-8 on the year. Bates has won its last four outings to improve to 7-4 overall.

Game 1: Bates 6, Babson 2
Junior Lexi Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a home run, classmate Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) had an RBI triple as part of a two-hit game and fellow junior Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled twice and scored a run to lead the Beavers. First-year Anna Topel (Oak Park, Ill.) went the distance in the circle and dropped to 2-4 on the year with the loss after striking out five and giving up four earned runs.

Senior Ella Maher (Newton, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, junior Maya Lee (Wayland, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and classmate Sienna Pietrasiewicz (Norton, Mass.) contributed two hits while knocking in a run and scoring once to pace the Bobcats' 11-hit attack. Senior Delaney Rankin (Harrison, Maine) improved to 3-2 on the season in the circle, striking out three and allowing two earned runs in a complete-game effort.

Pietrasiewicz gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with a two-out single to center in the bottom of the first and Bates extended it to 3-0 in the second when Lee plated senior Sophie Garber (Waterville Valley, N.H.) with a single to up the middle and came all the way around to score on a three-base error. Sealey got Babson on the board with a homer down the right field line to lead off the fourth and McCall started the fifth with a double and later scored on Walsh's two-out triple to right center, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Rankin worked around a double by Sealey to start the sixth and the Bobcats tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-out double to left by Maher.

Game 2: Bates 2, Babson 1
Sophomore Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a double, while Walsh, Sealey, sophomore Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) and first-year Alexa Young (Madison, Conn.) each singled once for the Green and White. Junior Katie Vlacich (Concord, Mass.) fell to 0-3 on the year the loss after striking out five and allowing two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.

Junior Isabella Albro (New York, N.Y.) recorded her first complete game and first win of the year allowing one run on six hits to go along with two strikeouts for the Bobcats, who got hits from six different players in the victory.

Babson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Walsh beat out an infield single and moved to second on a ground out before scoring on Sealey's RBI single to center. Bates answered back in the bottom of the second though as junior Isabel Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) and classmate Emily Kennedy (East Hampton, N.Y.) singled around a pair of strikeouts by Vlacich and came home to score on sophomore Maddy Miller's (Norway, Maine) two-out double to the wall in right center.

The Beavers had a golden opportunity to erase their deficit in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with one out thanks to a double by DiCampello, a fielding error and a walk to McCall. Albro escaped the jam unscathed though, inducing a ground ball to shortstop to get the force out at the plate and an inning-ending fly ball to right to keep the hosts in front.

Vlacich retired 10 in a row through the middle innings before issuing a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth. The Green and White got the potential tying run on base thanks to a one-out single by Young in the top of the seventh before Albro retired back-to-back hitters to end the game.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson travels to Smith for a doubleheader, while Bates hosts Amherst in a twin bill.
