No. 19/14 Women’s Lacrosse Drops NEWMAC Opener at Coast Guard, 10-6

NEW LONDON, Conn.— Senior Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) tallied seven points with four goals and three assists, and the US Coast Guard Academy rattled off nine consecutive goals while holding No. 19/14 Babson College scoreless for nearly 38 minutes on the way to a 10-6 victory over the Beavers in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the loss, Babson suffered its first setback of the season and dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard bounced back from its first loss of the season with its first win all-time over the Green and White and improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

First-year Jenna Wong (Walpole, Mass.) scored three goals, senior Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) registered a goal and two assists, and first-years Grace Rooney (Milton, Mass.) and Hailey Murray (Swarthmore, Pa.) added one goal each for the Beavers. Junior Claire Jones (Sudbury, Mass.) collected four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, sophomore Courtney Laden (Wilmette, Ill.) chipped in with two caused turnovers and two ground balls, and junior Morgan McGahan (Ho Ho Kus, N.J.) made a season-high nine saves in goal in the setback.

First-year Joely Schaumloffel (Remsenburg, N.Y.) contributed three goals and two assists for the Bears, while senior Hannah Warnke (Lincoln, Neb.) was good for two goals and first-year Taylor Thorne (Edgewater, Md.) finished with a goal and an assist. Junior Tylr Neely (Hillsborough, N.J.) grabbed a game-high five draw controls, senior Rowan Walsh (Hampstead, Md.) forced three turnovers, and classmate Lauren Henry (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore Ella Campbell had two caused turnovers and two ground balls apiece. Sophomore Kailee Heron (West Islip, N.Y.) made five saves to earn the win in the Bears' goal.

The Beavers had the upper hand early on as Murray potted her first career goal and Rooney followed with her second to give Babson a 2-0 lead six minutes in. Warnke put the hosts on the board with a goal with 7:34 on the clock but Wong answered just 20 second later to give the Green and White a 3-1 lead with seven minutes to go in the opening frame.

The Babson offense went cold and did not score again until the fourth quarter, while Coast Guard closed up the first period with a pair of goals and added four more in the second quarter and three more in the third to open up a 10-3 lead. Schaumloffel and McAllister tied the score at 3-3 with first-quarter markers, Schaumloffel and Warnke put the Bears in front in the second quarter before McAllister went back-to-back to make it 7-3 at halftime, and McAllister, Thorne and Schaumloffel extended the lead to 10-3 with six minutes remaining in the third stanza.

The Green and White started a comeback attempt to open the fourth quarter as Wong tallied consecutive goals, one in the opening minute and another with 11:39 remaining, and Bedard followed with a goal with 11 minutes remaining to cut the deficit to four goals, but that ended up as the end of the scoring for either team as Coast Guard went on to the victory.

Coast Guard finished with a 29-18 margin in total shots and 15-8 in shots on goal. The hosts had a 16-11 advantage in ground balls and were 2-for-4 on free position shots while Babson missed on all four of its free-position attempts.

Babson will travel to No. 14/18 College of New Jersey next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game in Ewing, N.J. Coast Guard will host the Merchant Marine Academy for the Superintendents' Trophy on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
