Podium Finishes in Men’s 3-Meter Diving and 800 Free Relay Highlight Day One of NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Babson College produced one program record and earned podium finishes in both men's events to highlight the opening night of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday inside MIT's Zesiger Center Pool.

The only official events were the men's 3-meter diving and the men's and women's 800-yard freestyle relays. The Beavers are in second place with 91 points through two events in the men's scoring, while the women's squad is tied for third with 52 points through just one event.

KrolJunior David Krol (Grafton, Wis.) finished runner-up in the men's 3-meter diving for the second year in a row with a career-best score of 514.92, less than three points off the four-decades-old program record of 517.75 set by Paul Cuneo '85.  Krol, who was also runner-up in the event last season, becomes the first two-time All-Conference diver for the Green and White since Aaron Paradis '10 in 2007 and 2010.

The Beaver contingent of junior Anthony Taslakov (Sherborn, Mass.), sophomore William Iglar (Marietta, Ga.), first-year Evan Hong (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Tommy Hannenian (Sacramento, Calif.) brought home second place in the 800 free relay, finishing in a program-record time of 6:43.84. Their time broke the mark of 6:44.77 set at last year's championships and made them just the second All-Conference relay team for Babson since 2002, joining the 200 free relay team in 2023.

The Babson quartet of first-year Josh Adler (Merrimac, Mass.), sophomores Ryan Furudera (Tokyo, Japan) and Phillip Spiridonov (Ridgewood, N.J.) and senior Marcelo Carrion (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished in fourth place in the "B" race of the 800 free relay in a time of 7:07.92.

On the women's side, the Babson group of sophomore Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.), first-year Middy Hinckley (Trent Woods, N.C.), sophomore Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.), and junior Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) finished sixth in the women's 800 free relay in a time of 7:54.47, which is the second-fastest time in program history.

Babson's second contingent of senior Sophia Sznewajs (Edina, Minn.), first-year AJ Hallbert (Enterprise, Ala.), and sophomores Hailey Cronan (New Market, Md.) and Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) took second place in the 'B' final in a time of 7:59.83.

Day two of the NEWMAC Championships resumes on Friday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
