CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—First-year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored to help top-seeded MIT defeat second-seeded Babson College, 7-3, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament final on Sunday afternoon at Briggs Field.
Babson, which suffered a pair of losses to the Engineers in the conference tournament, sees its season come to a close at 26-15. MIT captured its third consecutive NEWMAC title and improved to 28-10 with its 14th win over the last 16 games.
Junior
Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and senior
Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Beavers. Graduate student
Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) gave up just one run in 3.2 innings of relief after classmate
Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) allowed four earned runs to go along with four strikeouts over the first 2.1 innings.
First-year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) singled and drove in two runs, and senior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.) and first-year Maggie Feng (Brookfield, Wis.) both singled, knocked in a run and scored to lead the Engineers. Senior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) went the distance in the circle allowing three runs on seven hits to improve to 17-2 with the victory.
Thiessen led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right, Mikayla Cable () followed with a walk and both would later score as MIT took advantage of a pair of errors to build a 2-0 advantage. The Green and White answered right back though, as sophomore
Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and first-year
Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) both walked with one out and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by first-year
Kay LaLiberty (Lowell, Mass.) before Moore ripped a double to left to bring them both home.
The Engineers went back in front in the bottom of the inning as Benevides and Thiessen reached on infield singles and swiped a bag to move into scoring position before coming around on Ladd's two-run single. The Beavers cut their deficit to 4-3 on a two-out RBI knock by sophomore
Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.), but Feng smacked an RBI double down the left field line and then scored on Benevides' RBI single to center extending the margin to 6-3.
Babson made the final two outs of the fourth inning on the base paths and Langmeyer took advantage of strong play by her defense, retiring the final seven batters she faced after giving up a two-out single to Pak in the fifth.
