Softball Settles for Split at Trinity

Whiteford Records Fourth Shutout, Moore Moves into Third Place on Beavers' Career Hits List on Wednesday

HARTFORD, Conn.—Graduate student Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, R.I.) recorded her fourth shutout of the season in game one as visiting Babson College split a non-conference doubleheader with Trinity College at the Trinity Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beavers won the opener 5-0 before the Bantams responded with a 5-2 victory in game two. Babson is now 15-8 on the year, while Trinity snapped a three-game skid to improve to 8-15 overall.

Game 1: Babson 5, Trinity 0
Whiteford struck out four and scattered seven hits to improve to 7-4 with the win, and first-year Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) was 2-for-2 with her first career home run, a double and a season-high three RBI to lead the Babson offense. Senior Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, first-year Kay LaLiberty (Lowell, Mass.) had a double and junior Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and first-year Belle DiCampello each knocked in a run in the win.

Senior Taylor Mikolajcz (Johns Creek, Ga.) went 2-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases to lead the Bantams' offense. Sophomore Annie Konieczka (Maynard, Mass.) gave up four earned runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort in the circle but dropped to 3-6 on the year with the loss.

Moore led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI ground out to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead. Trinity stranded Mikolajcz at third in the bottom of the first and left runners on the corners in the second before the Beavers broke the game open with a three-run third.

LaLiberty led off with a double and DeLong followed with a two-run homer down the left field line to make it 3-0. Moore singled and moved to second on an error before coming home on another miscue by the Bantams to make it a four-run game. DeLong brought home sophomore Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) with a two-out double to the gap in right center extending the margin to 5-0 in the top of the fourth.

The Bantams had their best opportunity to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with two outs, but Pak ran down a shot into the left centerfield gap by sophomore Makenna True (Hooksett, N.H.) to help Whiteford get out of the inning.

Game 2: Trinity 5, Babson 2
Senior Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Pak and sophomore Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) each singed and drove in a run for the Beavers. Fellow sophomore Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) suffered her first loss of the year in a complete-game effort after giving up four earned runs on five hits while striking out five.

Graduate student Kennedy Rogers (Meridian, Idaho) hit a two run homer and junior Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored to pace Trinity. Sophomore Zofia Sargent (Shrewsbury, Mass.) allowed two runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings to improve to 5-8 with the win in the circle.

The Green and White drew back-to-back two-out walks and Raymond singled back up the middle to bring home sophomore Jacklyn Paglieri (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) for a  1-0 lead in the top of the first. Mikolajcz worked a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and Alper followed with an RBI single to give the Bantams a 2-1 lead in the second.

Pak tied it up with an RBI knock in the top of the third but the hosts went ahead for good in the last of the fifth as senior Erin Steed (Chicago, Ill.) reached on a three-base error and came in to score on classmate Isabella Calagna's (Chino Hills, Calif.) one-out single to center. The Bantams tacked on a pair of two-out insurance runs in the sixth as Alper triple to the gap in right center and Rogers blasted a two-run shot to left center one batter later.

Both teams return to action on Friday as Babson travels to Wellesley for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., while Trinity hosts Tufts in a 2 p.m. twin bill.
