Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.),
Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) and
Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.) and graduate student
Ellie Hilsabeck (Hingham, Mass.) scored three goals apiece as No. 14/16 Babson College defeated Wheaton College, 19-6, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse game at MacDowell Field.
Babson, ranked 14th by the IWLCA and 16th by USA Lacrosse Magazine, extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 11-2 overall and 8-0 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton dropped its second game in a row and fell to 8-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Novitch added a pair of assists for a five-point outing and Blake chipped in with one assist for a four—point performance for the Beavers. Senior
Solana Fahey (North Andover, Mass.) contributed two goals, senior
Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) grabbed eight draw controls, and senior
Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore
Morgan McGahan (Ho Ho Kus, N.J.) made nine and three saves, respectively, in goal in the victory.
Senior Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) tallied a goal and an assist for the Lyons, who got six goals from six different players. Smart also collected six draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers in a strong all-around performance, and classmate Talia Banglmaier (Kennebunk, Maine) scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore Jenna Langan (Lincoln, R.I.) made four saves in 52 minutes off the bench in the setback.
The Beavers wasted no time seizing control of the game as senior
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) fired in a shot 10 seconds after the opening whistle, Blake followed a minute later with a goal off an assist by Novitch, and Hilsabeck and Downer converted back-to-back free-position shots to make it 4-0 before the game was five minutes old. Novitch scored her first goal with nine minutes to go in the quarter before Wheaton got on the board with a goal by junior Riley Kilbourn (Madison, Conn.) with 7:21 on the clock.
The Green and White scored the next five goals to wrap up the first quarter with a 10-1 margin, and opened the second frame with four in a row as the lead ballooned to 14-1. Hilsabeck scored twice and senior
Cameron Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio), Fahey, and Downer one each to close out the first quarter, and Blake and Novitch each buried two goals in the second quarter surge. Junior Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) scored a late goal from Smart for the Lyons but the Beavers took a 14-2 lead into the break.
Babson outscored Wheaton 3-1 in the third quarter, with one goal each by Fahey, Downer and Connolly, while sophomore Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) accounted for the Lyons' goal. First-year Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, Maine) and Smart opened the fourth quarter with goals for the Lyons, but sophomore
Mia Fierro (Oswego, N.Y.) and junior
Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) answered for the Beavers before sophomore Annemieke Buterbaugh (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) rounded out the scoring for Wheaton.
Babson finished with a 31-22 advantage in shots and a 17-11 margin in draw controls. Wheaton had a narrow 15-14 edge in ground balls.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday with a key NEWMAC encounter with Springfield at 12:30 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Wheaton plays again on Saturday at Coast Guard at 12 p.m. in New London, Conn.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers have won 10 consecutive games versus the Lyons since 2016 and have a 30-16 lead all-time against Wheaton in a series that dates back to 1987.
• Babson extended its winning streak against NEWMAC foes to 29 games while outscoring their opponents 550-155.
• Novitch notched her 100th career goal in the second quarter and is now one of just five players in Babson history with at least 100 goals and 60 assists (100-61-161).
• Murphy moved into a tie for first all-time among Babson goalkeepers with 54 career wins, equaling the mark set by Sarah Macary '11.
