BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student
Cameron Whiteford (Centerville, Md.) and sophomore
Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) both recorded shutouts and Babson College matched its highest scoring output since 1999 in game two on the way to sweeping a doubleheader against visiting Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Beavers won the opener 2-0 before routing the Pioneers 20-0 in five innings in game two.
Game 1: Babson 2, Smith 0
Whiteford struck out 10 and allowed just one hit, a bloop to shallow right field in the fourth inning, to improve to 6-3 on the year with her third shutout of the season. Sophomore
Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.) doubled and junior
Allie Cubberly (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and first-year
Samantha Skivo (Conshohocken, Pa.) each drove in a run for the Beavers.
Smith junior Emilie Doty (Arlington, Va.) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second and Whiteford did the same with a comeback and consecutive strikeouts in the top of the third to keep the game scoreless. The Green and White also got runners to second and third with two outs in the fifth before Doty got a long fly out to center to escape any damage.
Babson stranded six runners over the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth. Sophomore
Charlotte Raymond (Wrentham, Mass.) drew a one-out walk, Walsh followed with a double to center and Skivo laced a single to center to bring home Raymond with the game's first run. Cubberly then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Walsh for a two-run advantage.
Whiteford issued a one-out walk to first-year Lily Hackett (Concord, N.H.) but got an infield pop-up and a ground ball to second to close out the victory.
Doty, who struck out five and walked four, dropped to 3-9 on the year with the loss in the circle.
Game 2: Babson 20, Smith 0 (5 inn.)
Skivo and first-year
Belle DiCampello (Pottstown, Pa.) both finished with three hits, junior
Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with four RBI and sophomore
Ruby Madia (Princeton Junction, N.J.) had a pair of hits, including her first career grand slam, to lead the Beavers' 16-hit attack. Sophomore
Devin McCall (Virginia Beach, Va.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in support of Vlacich, who fanned six and scattered five hits to record her third career shutout.
Junior Elinor Washington (Sacramento, Calif.) went 2-for-3 for the Pioneers, who committed a season-high eight errors in the loss.
Babson sent 15 batters to the plate and produced seven hits while taking advantage of two errors and two hit batsmen as part of a 10-run first inning. Pak had both a two-run double and an RBI single, senior
Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) was plunked twice, swiped three bags and scored a pair of runs, and both Raymond and first-year
Maddy DeLong (Cranford, N.J.) had RBI base hits in the frame.
The Beavers got RBI knocks from McCall, Skivo and DiCampello in the third before Madia smacked a two-out grand slam to left to cap a nine-run uprising that extended the lead to 20-0.
Babson is back in action on Monday when it hosts a doubleheader against Wheaton beginning at 3 p.m. Smith travels to WPI next Friday for a pair of games starting at 3:30 p.m.
