BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior
Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) tied the program's all-time record with her 60th career win and graduate student
Kate Karamouzis (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) drove in a run in each game as Babson College swept WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Beavers won the opener 4-0 and then rallied to defeat the Engineers, 3-1, in game two. Babson, which has won four consecutive games, ends the regular season at 24-16 overall and 13-7 in conference play, while WPI has dropped its last five outings to slip to 20-17-1 overall and 11-9 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Babson 4, WPI 0
O'Reilly, who tied the career wins mark of Ali Reilly '18, struck out seven as part of a complete-game two-hitter to improve to 15-7 on the year with her 10th win in the last 12 starts. Karamouzis and junior
Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) both recorded two hits and knocked in a run, graduate student
Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) singled, swiped a bag and scored twice, and junior
Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) double, walked and scored for the Beavers.
First-years Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, Mass.) and Callie Allison (Milford, Ohio) both singled for the Engineers. Fellow rookie Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, Mass.) dropped to 7-6 on the year in the circle after giving up three earned runs in a complete-game effort.
The Green and White took the lead in the bottom of the second after loading the bases with one out. Musco scored when Fairbairn's throw home from shortstop on a ground ball by Moore went off the helmet of first-year
Emily Walsh (Flemington, N.J.), who was running to third, and graduate student
Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) followed with an RBI ground out for a 2-0 advantage.
Hadjipanayis stroked a one-out double to left center and scored on Karamouzis' RBI single two batters later to make it 3-0 in the third, and Babson tacked on another insurance run in the sixth when Musco singled and stole second before racing home on Moore's two-out RBI knock.
O'Reilly, who did not allow a single runner into scoring position, retired the final 11 batters she faced and needed just 77 pitchers to record her eighth shutout of the year.
Game 2: Babson 3, WPI 1
Karamouzis and Musco both singled and drove in a run, Hadjipanayis was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and Moore doubled and walked for the Green and White. O'Reilly struck out three and allowed one run on three hits over the first three innings before first-year
Katie Vlacich (Concord, N.H.) tossed four shutout innings in relief to improve to 9-9 this spring with the win.
Junior Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) went the distance in the circle for WPI, allowing two earned runs on four hits and five walks to fall to 7-4 on the season.
The Engineers jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first as senior Sydney Russell (Arlington, Va.) led off with a single and scored on sophomore Emma Nagy's (Monroe, Wash.) double to left center two batters later. O'Reilly stranded a pair of runners in scoring position thanks to a strikeout of Case, and Babson pulled even in the last of the third as Karamouzis drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out wild pitch.
The Green and White had runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings before going in front in the sixth. Hadjipanayis singled to center to start the frame and came home with the go-ahead run on an RBI single to center by Karamouzis two batters later. Musco then plated Walsh with a sacrifice fly to left for a 3-1 lead.
Vlacich retired 11 of the final 12 hitters she faced, allowing only a one-out single to first-year Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, N.Y.) in the top of the seventh.
Babson, which earned the fourth seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament, will face fifth-seeded Smith on Wednesday in Springfield, Mass., while sixth-seeded WPI hosts seventh-seeded Coast Guard in a play-in game on Monday.
