NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Junior Stephanie Rodriguez (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and sophomore Emma Cavanaugh (Southbury, Conn.) both crossed the finish line in a time of 20:39 to help the Babson College women's cross country team come in seventh at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday at the rain-soaked Smith Cross Country Course.
The Beavers total of 197 points is their lowest since 2011, and their seventh-place showing is also the program's best over the last seven seasons. Fourth-ranked MIT breezed to its 12th straight conference championship, while WPI and Coast Guard came in second and third, respectively. Wellesley finished fourth, the host Pioneers were fifth, and Mount Holyoke was sixth.
Rodriguez came in 30th and Cavanaugh finished in 31st position overall in the 5k meet for the Green and White. First-year Hannah Piispanen (Winchester, Mass.) came in 48th with a time of 21:12, which was 12 seconds ahead of sophomore Camille Lewis (Cheshire, Conn.).
Senior Chaela Hood (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded a time of 21:56, sophomore Caroline Winicki (Middlebury, Conn.) ran the course in 21:59, and senior Emily MacDonald (East Sandwich, Mass.) crossed the finish line in 22:35. First-year Nina Sitarski (Plainville, Mass.) posted a time of 22:40 in her conference championship debut, while sophomore Kelley Burtch (Norwell, Mass.) finished in 23:48.
Babson returns to action on November 10 when it travels to Brunswick, Maine, for the NCAA New England Championships at Bowdoin. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
