Johns Hopkins Advances Past Eastern in Babson Park Regional Opener, 3-0
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Eleni Panagopoulos led all players with 15 kills to help Johns Hopkins University defeat Eastern University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20), in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament Babson Park Regional on Friday inside Staake Gymnasium.
Johns Hopkins, which won two of three matches against Eastern this season, improves to 22-7 and will take on 23rd-ranked Bowdoin College in a second round match on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles see their season come to a close at 25-7.
Louisa Kishton put away 12 kills, Nicole Hada finished with 37 assists and four service aces, and Michelle Abt recorded eight digs for the Blue Jays, who served up 12 aces and hit .309 as a team in the win.
Caroline Shelby tallied eight kills and seven digs, while Sarah Roberts added five kills for Eastern. Morgan Kline dished out 21 assists and Cecilia Bauer led all players with 10 digs in the loss.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 17-7 opening-set lead and hit .342 while recording 17 kills on its way to an easy first-set victory. The Eagles took an early four-point lead in game two only to see the Blue Jays respond with a 13-3 run to build a 14-8 advantage. Eastern got as close as four at 16-12, but Panagopoulos put away three late kills and Hada contributed two of her four service aces to forge a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Eagles got three straight aces from Katie Stenby as part of a five-point run to take a 13-12 lead in game three. The momentum was short-lived however, as Panagopoulos, Kishton and Lauren Anthony combined for eight kills in the span of 12 points to extended the Johns Hopkins’ lead to 24-18.
