Women’s Volleyball Downs Vassar in NCAA Tournament First Round, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) and first-year Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) both finished with 12 kills as the Babson College women's volleyball team defeated Vassar College, 3-1 (25-11, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Clarkson University.

With the win, Babson improves to 21-9 overall and advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in as many appearances. Vassar sees its season come to a close at 22-8.

Sophomore Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) dished out a match-high 39 assists to go along with 11 digs, while junior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) led all players with 28 digs for the Beavers. First-year Gaby Miller (Miami, Fla.) and junior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) recorded 10 and seven kills, respectively, and first-year Cassidy Witten (Honolulu, Hawaii) chipped in with 12 digs in the win.

Junior Devan Gallagher (San Francisco, Calif.) led all players with 16 kills and classmate Lauren Ninkovich (Portland, Ore.) added 12 kills and 11 digs for the Brewers. Fellow junior Annie MacMillan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) dished out 33 assists, while first-year Anna Zucchero (Newton, Mass.) totaled a team-high 26 digs in the loss.

The Green and White scored nine straight points on Cameron's serve and stormed out to a 12-1 opening-set lead. The Beavers registered 14 kills and hit .308 on their way to building a 15-point advantage late in the frame.

The Beavers trailed 12-11 in game two before ripping off 14 of the final 17 points to build a commanding two-set lead. Carosotto and Miller combined for five kills and Babson took advantage of eight Vassar errors in the stanza.

The Brewers kept the match alive with a strong fourth-set performance that included a late 6-1 run, and then built a 14-9 lead in the fourth thank to two kills apiece by Gallagher and Ninkovich, as well as five errors by the Green and White. Babson rallied though, as Carosotto accounted for two kills, Witten served up a pair of aces and Puccio followed with a kill for an 18-15 edge.

Vassar closed within a point twice, the last time coming at 21-20 before another kill by Puccio and two more from Roseen put the match away.

Babson will face either regional host Clarkson or Morrisville State in a second round match on Saturday at 5 p.m.
