Women's Volleyball Suffers Four-Set Loss to No. 15 La Verne

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Babson College women's volleyball team was limited to a season-low 31 kills in a four-set ( 25-15, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18) loss to the 15th-ranked University of La Verne in its opening match of the MIT Invitational on Friday night at Rockwell Cage.

With the loss, Babson falls to 4-1 on the year, while La Verne improves to 5-0.

First-year Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished with nine kills and a season-high seven digs, while junior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) added seven and six kills, respectively, for the Beavers. Fellow sophomore Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led all players with 27 assists, and junior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) contributed a team-high 13 digs.

Senior Marisa Rojo (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and sophomore Mireya Rojo (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) both had 10 kills for the Leopards, who hit .207 on the night. Junior Kristen Sanchez (Alta Loma, Calif.) led all players with 21 digs, while classmate Kelsie Sievers (Apple Valley, Calif.) contributed a match-high seven blocks.

La Verne hit .417 in the opening game and used an 11-2 run to build a commanding 19-9 advantage on its way to a one-set lead. The Green and White bounced back in a second set that featured 12 ties by recording 13 kills and hitting .314 to even the match. The Beavers went ahead for good at 20-19 on a kill by junior Gizem Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey), and got two late kills from fellow junior Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.) in addition to a service ace by Roseen to close frame.

The Leopards never trailed in the game three, using 10 kills and six blocks to take a 2-1 advantage. Babson took a 7-6 edge in the fourth set on a block by Cameron and first-year Sabrina Lechner (Novato, Calif.) before La Verne responded by scoring six of the next seven points to build a 13-8 lead. The Beavers got as close as 16-14 on an attack error, but La Verne followed with four straight points and used four late service aces to close out the win.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson takes on SUNY Geneseo at 10 a.m. and Roger Williams at 2 p.m., while the Leopards are set to face Springfield and the host Engineers.

• Friday's match was the first all-time meeting between Babson and La Verne.
• The Beavers, who entered the night hitting .293 as a team over their first four matches, finished with a .015 hitting percentage against the Leopards.
• The Green and White is now 5-4 at the MIT Invitational over the last three seasons.
