Women's Volleyball Downs Rhode Island College, Franklin in Straight Sets

WALTHAM, Mass.—The Babson College women's volleyball team hit .275 on its way to sweeping a pair of matches at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday. The Beavers cruised past Rhode Island College, 25-15, 25-16, 25-13, in their opener, and then defeated Franklin College, 25-8, 31-29, 28-26, to conclude the tournament.

Babson, which also defeated Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Friday night, improves to 3-0 on the year. Franklin slipped to 2-1 with their loss to the Green and White, while Rhode Island College is now 0-2.

Junior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) both finished with 10 kills apiece for the Beavers, who hit .333 as a team against Rhode Island College. Sophomore Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed a match-high 30 assists and seven digs, while junior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) chipped in with team highs of eight digs and four service aces.

The Green and White trailed just once early in the opening set before ripping off six straight points to build an 8-3 lead. Babson recorded seven aces in the frame, including two apiece by Beecher, Roseen and first-year Gaby Miller (Miami, Fla.) for a one-set advantage.

The Beavers scored 11 of the final 13 points in the second set, getting five kills from Roseen and two more from junior Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.) to build a 2-0 lead. The Green and White followed it up hitting .444 in the third set, which included six kills from Carosotto to close out the match.

Babson blitzed Franklin in the opening set, building a 22-3 lead behind 11 kills and 10 errors by the Grizzlies for a 1-0 advantage. The teams combined for 21 ties and 10 lead changes in the second frame before the Green and White ripped off three straight points to pull out a 31-29 win. The Beavers overcame four set points and tied the set at 29 on a kill by Carosotto before picking up back-to-back points on errors by Franklin.

The Grizzlies opened up a pair of four-point leads in the third set only to see Babson rally for a 23-21 advantage on a service ace by first-year Sabrina Lechner (Novato, Calif). Franklin responded with three straight points to take a 24-23 lead, but were unable to take advantage of three set points. Kills by first-year Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.), Carosotto and Roseen tied the match at 26, and the Beavers scored the final two points on the serve of Beecher to finish off the victory.

Roseen led all players with 12 kills, Puccio added 10 and Carolsotto chipped in with nine kills and three blocks for the Green and White. Cameron finished with a season-high 34 assists, while Beecher led all players with a season-best 22 digs in the win.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emmanuel at 7 p.m.
