Volleyball Surges Past Emerson, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- First-year Mary Donahue matched her season-high with 20 kills and senior captain Kathleen Lynch added 38 assists to lift visiting Babson College earn a 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-16, 25-15) victory over Emerson College in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Thursday night. With the win, the Beavers, ranked 12th in New England, continue their hot start as they improve to 6-2 on the year.

In addition to Donahue's match-high 20 kills, Babson received a season-high nine kills and a .375 hitting percentage from junior Christina Cervini. Lynch contributed three errorless kills and 15 digs to go with her 38 assists, sophomroe Kseniya Stepanova added 16 digs, and first-year Elizabeth Sullivan posted 13 digs. First-year Krissy Robertson chipped in with a solid all-around effort, finishing with four kills, four service aces, and a pair of block assists.

Alyssa Thorne led Emerson (4-4) in defeat, hitting .269 with eight kills. Jamie Morgan led all players with 28 digs, and Juliana Tucker tossed in five kills, 19 assists, and eight digs.

Cervini recorded back-to-back kills to cap a 9-2 start in the opening set for the Beavers. The Lions eventually got back to within four at 9-5, but Cervini and Donahue each recorded kills to bookend a 10-2 burst that extended the lead to 19-7. Donahue would add four more kills the rest of the way as Babson took the first set, 25-14.

After Emerson won the second set, 25-16, to square the overall match at 1-1, Cervini led the Beavers to a 25-16 triumph in set three. The junior opposite hit .600 with four kills in the frame, while Lynch dished out 10 assists, including one on Donahue's strike that ended the set. Donahue then overwhelmed the Lions in the fourth and final frame, registering eight kills without an error to send Babson to a 25-15 set win and its third match victory in its last four outings.

The Beavers will hit the road again this weekend when they head to WPI for their second NEWMAC match of the season at 1 p.m.
