Volleyball Rallies To Beat WNEC, 3-2, At Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- On the first day of the two-day Wesleyan Quad, Babson College rallied from two sets down to secure an exciting five-set victory over Western New England College, 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-12).

Leading Babson to victory over WNEC with a match-high 22 kills was junior Meg Flaherty.  Sophomore Kathleen Lynch collected 48 assists along with 14 digs and three aces while first-year Jessica Millman led the Beavers with 27 digs.  Also supporting the Babson cause was junior Nina Milovanovic with 18 kills and 20 digs.  Sophomore Cathy Tinker chipped in with three blocks. 

WNEC got a career-high 40 digs from senior Marci Egbert while senior Katharina Boes had 35 assists and four blocks.  Kills leaders were freshman Maureen Pollet with 13 and junior Inna Sergeychik with 11.  Sergeychik also was in on four blocks.

Babson broke an 8-8 tie in the fifth and deciding set with a 4-0 run for a 12-8 margin.  WNEC narrowed the gap to 12-10 but got no closer as the Beavers held on for the 15-12 match-clinching victory.  WNEC had led 2-0 in sets, coming back from a 17-15 deficit in the opener to win 25-19 with a 10-2 run.  The Golden Bears then scored the final four points of the second set to erase a 23-21 deficit for a 25-23 triumph.  Babson turned the tide in the third set as the Beavers never trailed and led by as many as eight, 21-13, before settling for a 25-22 win.  WNEC came close to winning in three as the teams were separated by a single point, 23-22, behind a 9-2 Golden Bear surge, but the final two points went to the Beavers.  Babson recovered from an early 7-2 shortfall in the fourth set to go ahead 12-8 and maintained the lead en route to a 25-17 decision.  It was the second time this season that Babson defeated WNEC by a 3-2 count.
