WESTWOOD, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team was picked to finish second when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its preseason coaches' poll on Thursday morning.
MIT, which captured its fourth straight conference title last spring, garnered eight of nine first-place votes to finish as a near unanimous choice to repeat. The Beavers collected the lone remaining first-place vote to finish ahead of third-place Wellesley College. Mount Holyoke College and Wheaton College rounded out the top five.
Babson (0-1), which dropped its only dual match of the fall to Division II Merrimack College, returns four players from a team that went 14-6 overall and 7-1 in league play last season. Second-year head coach Michael Kopelman brings back a trio of all-conference performers and will face five teams ranked in the ITA preseason top 40 after guiding the Green and White to the NEWMAC Tournament final last May.
The Beavers kick off the spring on February 28 when they take on Franklin Pierce inside the Wimbledon 109 Tennis Club in Walpole, Mass., at 12:45 p.m.
