BABSON PARK, Mass.—Despite victories from both junior Carolina Merz (Santa Tecla, El Salvador) and first-year Ana Makatsaria (Georgia) in singles and doubles, Babson College suffered a 5-4 loss to visiting Merrimack College in non-conference women's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Complex.
Babson, which was playing its only dual match of the fall is 0-1, while Merrimack improves to 3-0 on the year.
Merz and Makatsaria were 8-6 winners at number one doubles, but the Beavers' second pairing of senior Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) and first-year Ipek Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and its third duo of sophomore Mary Kille (Simsbury, Conn.) and first-year Laura De La Espriella (Sunrise, Fla.) both suffered 8-5 losses.
Merz recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number one singles, while Makatsaria posted a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at number two. Babson's third singles point came at number three where Akgul rallied from down a set to win 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9).
De La Espriella was beaten 6-3, 6-1 at number four, Roeper suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss at number five, and Kille dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at number six.
Babson wraps up the fall portion of its schedule at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) beginning on Friday, October 11.
