WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—The Babson College duo of junior Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) and sophomore Carolina Merz (Santa Tecla, El Salvador) opened play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships with a first round doubles win on Friday at Williams College.
The Beavers' pairing defeated Sydney Byrnes and Lauren Hernandez of Bates College, 8-2, in the round of 32 and will face either Anya Ramras and Camilla Trapness of Amherst College or Mina Karamercan and Maggie Dorr of Tufts Universty in a second round match on Saturday. Both Merz and Roeper dropped their opening round singles matches. Merz suffered a 6-3, 6-2 setback to Caroline Garrido of Tufts, while Roeper was beaten 6-2, 6-0 by Devon Wolfe of Bowdoin College.
Merz and Roeper will take on their second round doubles opponent on Saturday morning.
