BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College improved its perfect record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league play with a 7-2 victory over visiting Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis match at the Farwell Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers built a 2-1 lead in doubles play, thanks to a victory at number two by senior captains Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) and Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) at number two and junior Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) and first-year Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) at number three. Springfield (0-3 overall, 0-2 NEWMAC) collected its first point of the match at number one, where the tandem of junior Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.) bested Babson's duo of senior captain Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and first-year Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.), 9-7.
Carney gathered another victory for the Pride at number one singles, as she outlasted first-year Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) in a third-set superbreaker, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9). However, Babson swept the remaining five matches to clinch the overall 7-2 victory, with Stone winning, 7-6, 7-2, at number two, junior Mikaela Stamas (Northborough, Mass.) pulling out a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) win at three, Tamoshunas cruising, 6-0, 6-3, at four, Mercer rolling, 6-2, 6-1, at five, and first-year Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) coasting, 6-0, 6-0, at number six.
