Women's Swimming & Diving Tops Eastern Connecticut, Men Edged by Roger Williams

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams recorded 13 first-place finishes in Saturday's meet at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday. The women defeated the host Warriors, 153-105, and suffered a 166-92 loss to Roger Williams University, while the Beavers dropped a 131.5-130.5 decision to the undefeated Hawks in the men's half of the meet.

The Babson women are now 7-9 on the year, while the men's squad slips to 8-4 in dual meet action. The women's program's seven victories are tied for the most since the 2000-01 campaign.

First-year Stella Hu (Wellesley, Mass.) factored into three of the Beavers' four victories on the women's side, highlighted by touching the wall first with a season-best time of 5:37.21 in the 500-yard freestyle. She teamed up with senior Maria Orive (Guatemala City, Guatemala), sophomore Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.) and first-year Abigail Voce (Oxford, N.Y.) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay. Hu, Nie, Voce and first-year Elizabeth Demoine (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.) also opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay.

Demoine came in first in the 50-yard butterfly, was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, and came in third with a season-best time of 1:03.71 in the 100-yard butterfly. Voce came in second in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while Nie finished as the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke and was third in the 50 backstroke.

Sophomore Julia Ferrara (Coto de Caza, Calif.) finished third in the 1000 free, while Orive and junior Tirza Rentovich (Harrisburg, Pa.) placed fourth in the 500 free and 50-yard breaststroke, respectively.

The Babson men won nine of 14 events, led by three individual victories from junior Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.). He claimed victory in both the 50- and 100-yard butterfly and also came in first in the 200-yard individual medley. Damiecki also teamed with sophomores Lachlan Dibbayawan (Bangkok, Thailand) and Kevin Luu (Malden, Mass.), and first-year Aaron Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to win the 400-yard medley relay.

Huynh touched the wall first in the 200 free and tied for first with a time of 54.91 in the 100-yard backstroke. Fellow first-year Ethan Yoo (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was victorious in the 50 breaststroke and 100 free.

Luu came in second in the 50 backstroke and Dibbayawan was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) placed second in the 500 free, while first-year Walter Lehneis (Hackettstown, N.J.) finished just behind Damiecki in the 200 IM. Additionally, sophomore Taras Polakoff (Orange County, Calif.) and first-year Reid Chavez (Shelton, Conn.) were third in the 50 backstroke and 100 butterfly, respectively.

The Green and White made it a sweep of both relay events as Yoo, Dibbayawan, Huynh and first-year Aiden Asuncion-Duong (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) finished first in the 400 free relay.

Babson wraps up the regular season next Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater State inside Morse Pool at 1 p.m.
