Beavers Win 21 of 22 Events to East Past Fighting Scots
WENHAM, Mass.—The Babson College swimming & diving teams got individual victories from 13 competitors and won 21 of 22 events on its way to a dominating sweep of Gordon College in a dual meet at the Bennett Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers were 164-14 winners in the men's half of the meet, while the women defeated the Fighting Scots, 138-44.
The Babson men (8-3) won all 11 events, highlighted by two victories from first-years Ethan Yoo (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Aaron Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Yoo was first in the both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly in addition to placing second in the 500 free, while Huynh finished ahead of the field in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke.
Junior Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.) edged Yoo by just 0.10 seconds with his winning time of 5:01.61 in the 500 free and added a second-place result in the 200 IM. Sophomore Kevin Luu (Malden, Mass.) came in first in the 100 backstroke, while first-year Walter Lehneis (Hackettstown, N.J.) won the 1650-yard freestyle and later came in second in the 200 backstroke. First-years Reid Chavez (Shelton, Conn.) and Joseph Wellman (Cohasset, Mass.) also posted victories in the 200 free and 500 free, respectively.
Junior Michael Cerny (Windsor, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 50 free, sophomore Connor O'Brien (Tempe, Ariz.) took second in the 100 free, and first-year Jack Argiro (Wallingford, Conn.) finished second in the 1650 free. Junior Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added a runner-up showing in the 200 free, sophomore Taras Polakoff (Orange County, Calif.) was second in the 100 butterfly and part of the Beavers' wins in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Sophomore Rishi Asher (Montezuma, N.M.) recorded third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly for the Green and White.
The Babson women (6-8) were led by the first-year duo of Abigail Voce (Oxford, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Demoine (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.), who were both part of three victories on the day. Voce was first in the 500-yard freestyle and 200 IM, while Demoine took first in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. They also finish first in the 200 medley relay alongside sophomore Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif.) and first-year Stella Hu (Wellesley, Mass.).
Nie was victorious in the 50 free, while Hu won the 200 free and came in second in the 100 butterfly. Junior Tirza Rentovich (Harrisburg, Pa.) came in first in the 100 free and sophomore Nataliya Gowan (San Antonio, Texas) finished ahead of the field in the 100 backstroke.
Senior Maria Orive (Guatemala City, Guatemala) was the runner-up in the 1650 free, sophomore Julia Ferrara (Coto de Caza, Calif.) placed second in the 200 free, and first-year Andrea Hamel (Gloucester, Mass.) recorded a second-place showing in the 50 free. Classmate Beatriz Regis (Dorado, Puerto Rico) came in second in the 100 backstroke and paired with Orive, Rentovich and first-year Rachel Li (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) to finish the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay.
