Swimming & Diving 12th after Day One at Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams put together a number of strong performances, including career-best times in nine different events, on the opening day of the 2017 Gomepi Invitational at WPI on Friday.

The Beavers finished the day with a combined team score of 221 points and sits in 12th place after 16 events. The host Engineers own a 64-point lead over second-place Rowan, while Stevens, Bryant and Bentley round out the top five.

Sophomore Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted the program's top individual result of the day by coming in 10th in the finals of the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:45.19. Classmate Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.), who was one of four swimmers to reach the finals by way of the prelims, won the B final and placed 11th overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 51.82.

Senior Mitchell Posk (Boynton Beach, Fla.) qualified 19th and placed seventh in the B final of the 50-yard freestyle (17th overall) with a time of 21.95. Junior Kenneth Mun (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) recorded a career-best time of 2:21.38 in the 200-yard breaststroke prelims and came in 10th in the B final and 20th overall in Friday night's finals.

Senior Jeff Cui (San Ramon, Calif.), sophomore Louis NeJame (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Nick Gutierrez (West Caldwell, N.J.) all recorded their top career times to finish 33rd through 35th in the 200 breast prelims on Friday morning.

The Babson women were led by sophomore Tirza Rentovich (Harrisburg, Pa.), who qualified 22nd and then came in third in the C final (23rd overall) with a season-best time of 25.30 in the 50-yard freestyle. First-year Jordan Mailly (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded the top time of her career (2:19.42) in the 200-yard individual medley prelims, while classmates Julia Ferrara (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Luna Zhang (Auburndale, Mass.) were separated by less than three seconds with career-best times in the 200 breaststroke prelims.

First-year Celine Nie (Irvine, Calif) and sophomore Grace Huang (Herndon, Va.) both competed in the 100-yard butterfly prelims for the Green and White. Ferrara also took part in the 1650 free on Friday night.

Day two of the Gompei Invitational begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday at WPI.
