5/5/10 - Softball
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its postseason softball awards this week, and five Babson College players were honored. First-years Catie Funk (Scarborough, Maine) and Jackie Enos (Taunton, Mass.) were both named to the All-Conference First Team, senior Danielle Liska (Seymour, Conn.) and sophomore captain Nicole Latini (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each garnered Second Team honors, and senior captain Brittney Russo (Middletown, Conn.) was selected to the Academic All-Conference Team. The Babson College Athletics Department held its 29th Annual Senior Awards Banquet on Friday night, where a total of nine individuals were honored. Women's lacrosse senior Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) was named Female Athlete of the Class, while men’s soccer senior Dan Fogarty (Brookline, N.H.) was named Male Athlete of the Class. Women's lacrosse senior Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) and ice hockey senior Gabriel Chenard-Poirier (St. Augustin, Quebec) were named Scolar-Athletes of the Class, and women's soccer senior Kayla Pomponi (Belmont, Mass.) took home the Michael J. Conlon Award. In addition to the senior awards, Grant Gosselin and the Undergraduate Admissions Team were the recipients of the prestigious Paul C. Staake Award for outstanding contributions to Babson Athletics, while a trio of first-year athletes were also honored. Softball first-year Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J.) received the Lori Vengrow Award, and men’s soccer freshman Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) and ice hockey first-year PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) were named co-winners of the Colin "Chip" Brown Award. Sophomore Hayley Feindel fired her fourth no-hitter of the season and second of the tournament as top-seeded Coast Guard beat third-seeded Babson, 3-0, in the losers bracket final of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Softball Tournament at Coast Guard on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Beavers see their stellar season come to a close with a record of 24-15. Babson senior Danielle Liska (13-8) took the loss in the final game of her magnificient career, giving up just three runs on five hits, walking six and striking out seven. [+]
