WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Babson College softball team concluded its 2011 regular season on Sunday afternoon, as the Beavers fell to Wellesley, 4-3, in a contest that was halted back on April 12.
With the loss, Babson (21-17, 9-7 NEWMAC) will enter next week's conference tournament as the fourth seed and will play fifth-seeded Wheaton at Coast Guard on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that contest will play host Coast Guard later that afternoon.
Last week saw Babson strike first in game two of the doubleheader, scoring runs in the third and fourth innings. Back-to-back doubles from sophomore Catie Funk and junior captain Nicole Latini made it 1-0 Beavers, while an RBI single from junior Jeff Pashos made it 2-0.
Wellesley countered with a two-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the day, at 4-2. After strikeouts sandwiched a Kimberly Cabral single, Lauren Goldfarb sent the first pitch of her at-bat over the left field fence to tie the game and spark a Wellesley rally. The Blue then strung together four straight hits, including an RBI double from Sinta Cebrian to take the lead. Babson relief pitcher Tess Rubega would then force a ground out to end the inning.
Babson set the scene for a late comeback of its own before the
game was halted due to darkness. With one out, the Beavers used
four walks and a hit by pitch to get one run back, but the game was
called with the bases loaded and one out.
In Sunday's continuation, Wellesley first-year Lindsay Johnson came on in relief and earned a six-pitch save, giving the Blue the 4-3 win. Johnson forced a swinging strikeout and then a foul out to preserve Sarah Schwartzmeyer's victory.
Funk and Pashos both had two hits in the loss for Babson, while sophomore Megan Brain took the loss to fall to 9-6 on the year.
