BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Megan Letta (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute to lift visiting St. John Fisher College to a 1-0 win over Babson College in non-conference women's soccer action on Friday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson opens the season at 0-1-0, while St. John Fisher begins the 2019 campaign at 1-0-0.
First-year goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich (Ottawa, Ontario) made seven saves in her collegiate debut for the Beavers. Her counterpart, Cardinals' junior Lila Platt (Rochester, N.Y.) also made seven saves to collect the victory.
Following a scoreless first half, Letta put St. John Fisher ahead for good just over five minutes into the second period. Babson broke up the Cardinals build up down the right side, but Letta intercepted a back pass that was intended for Fedosiewich at the top of the box and found the empty net for her first career marker.
Senior Maggie McCabe (Weston, Mass.) had the Beavers' best scoring chance of the game midway through the first half. Sophomore Alexis Fortune (Brampton, Ontario) beat a defender at the top of the box before sliding a pass to McCabe, who had her blast from just outside the six-yard box snagged by Platt.
St. John Fisher finished with a slim 13-11 edge in shots, while both teams attempted three corner kicks.
Babson returns to action on September 7 when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State at 1 p.m., while St. John Fisher travels to Brockport on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
• The Beavers are now 1-1-0 all-time against the Cardinals. The only prior meeting was the 2013 season opener.
• Friday's loss snapped Babson's six-game unbeaten streak in season openers that dated back to 2013.
• The setback also dropped the Beavers to 4-2-2 in home openers going back to 2012.
