Women's Soccer Downs Bates, 2-0

Women's Soccer Downs Bates, 2-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Katherine Cullen (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Kerry Dunn (Cohasset, Mass.) each recorded a goal as Babson College defeated visiting Bates College, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its second straight win, Babson improves to 3-3-0 on the year, while Bates, which is ranked eighth in the United Soccer Coaches regional poll, falls to 2-1-0 overall.

A pass from freshman Alicia Calcagni (Needham, Mass.) and a through ball by senior Victoria Penta (Belmont, Mass.) led to Cullen's second goal in as many games. She settled Penta's feed and drilled a shot past Bobcats' senior goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and inside the right post to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of play.

Bates outshot the Green and White 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but Babson junior goalkeeper Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.) handled both shots on frame. It was looking as though it would be a scoreless second half until Dunn scored the first goal of her career in the 82nd minute to finish off the two-goal shutout. Junior Kathryn Clark (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) carried the ball down the right wing before crossing into the box where Dunn settled it before calmly finding the back of the net.

The Beavers trailed 16-9 in shots, but recorded all five corners in the match. Gierschick finished six saves for the Greena and White, while McCarthy turned away four shots for the Bobcats.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday as they hit the road for a 4:30 p.m. match at No. 18 Brandeis. Bates has a quick turnaround as they return home to host U. of New England tomorrow at 2 p.m.
