BABSON PARK, Mass.-First-year forward Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) recorded a hat trick helping lead Babson College to a 3-0 victory over visiting Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field. Junior Amy Festa (Medfield, Mass.) added two assists, while sophomores Carley Martyniak (Foxboro, Mass.), and Mika Cucullo (South Salem, N.Y.) each added one assist to help the Beavers earn their first win of the 2011 season.
DePhilippo opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest, collecting a cross from Festa in front of the net and beating Hawks keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.). Martyniak started the play carrying the ball through the midfield before finding Festa on the left wing to help set up the goal. The Beavers, who led 1-0 at halftime, continued to pressure Roger Williams throughout the early portion of the second half, and were rewarded with in the 69th minute. DePhilippo was on the receiving end of another great service by Festa, this time beating Jaques to the ball in the air and heading it into the open net for a two-goal bulge. Less than nine minutes later, DePhilippo capped the scoring, taking a pass from Cucullo, and tucking the ball inside the far post for the final margin.
Babson's senior goalkeeper Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas) was terrific again, making six saves to record her first shutout of the season and tenth of her career. Her best save of the day came in the 73rd minute, diving to her right to deny Taryn Roussel's (Ivoryton, Conn.) blast following a corner kick to preserve the Beaver lead.
Roger Williams returns to action next Saturday, September 10, when they open up their Commonwealth Coast Conference slate, hosting Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00pm. Babson will play their third-consecutive home game on Wednesday, September 7, as they host Salem State College in a 4:00pm game at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
