BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Whitney Frary (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored the game's lone goal on a penalty kick at the 52-minute mark to lead the fourth-ranked William Smith College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Babson College in the first game of the 2011 Babson Classic at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday.
It was the second straight 1-0 triumph to start the season for the Herons (2-0), while the Beavers (0-1) suffered just their second season-opening defeat since 2001.
William Smith dominated possession throughout the contest, but the senior goalie Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas) and the Babson defense held strong for the first 51 minutes of play. The Herons then caught a break at the 52-minute mark, when a handball off a deflected shot in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Wojnar made a valiant effort on Frary's ensuing bid, but the Herons' junior striker beat the senior keeper with a perfectly struck shot that found the left corner for the game's first and only goal at 51:59.
Babson would put up its only shot on goal in the contest with 24 seconds remaining in regulation, but William Smith senior keeper Amanda Davis (Landing, N.J.) recorded her only save of the day to preserve her team's 1-0 shutout victory.
Wojnar finished with three saves in defeat for the Beavers, who return to action tomorrow when they host Roger Williams University at 3:30 p.m. on day two of the Babson Classic. Meanwhile, William Smith will head across town to face Classic co-host Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
