Women's Alpine Ski Wins GS, Finishes Third in Slalom at West Mountain

QUEENSBURY, N.Y.—The Babson College women's alpine ski team followed up a third-place finish in Saturday's slalom by taking three of the top five spots on the individual leaderboard to win the giant slalom on Sunday afternoon at West Mountain.

Sunday's victory in the GS was the Beavers' first since the opening race of the season at Wildcat Mountain, securing the team's second-place finish in the regular season MacConnell Division standings. Castleton, which finished first in the team standings, came in second behind Babson in the GS and won the slalom, finishing ahead of second-place Brown and the third-place Beavers.

Junior Sarah Mangiacotti (South Londonderry, Vt.) put together two strong runs to finish second overall in the GS with a time of 2:14.21 that left her just a tenth of a second out of first place. Senior Elizabeth Baer (Salt Lake City, Utah) was just under a half-second behind her in fourth place, while first-year Lauren Abdow (South Londonderry, Vt.) was fifth with a time of 2:15.09.

Sophomore Julia Martin (Belmont, Mass.) placed 11th and classmate Kendall Sargis (Duxbury, Mass.) rounded out the squad by coming in 45th.

Mangiacotti was Babson's top finisher in Saturday's slalom as well, posting the second fastest second-run time in the field to place seventh with a time of 1:49.16. Baer was 1.59 seconds behind her in ninth place, while Abdow crossed the finish line in 1:51.48 to come in 10th.

Martin moved up two spots after her initial run to come in 15th at 1:54.87, and Sargis improved six places in her second run to finish 40th overall.

The Beavers will take next weekend off before returning to the slopes for the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at Sugarloaf Mountain on February 22-23.
