Second Half Surge Propels Women's Lacrosse Past Drew, 12-11

BOX SCORE

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College women’s lacrosse team outscored their opponent Drew University 9-4 in the second half to take the lead on their way to a 12-11 win on Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field. The Beavers were led by junior Ellen McCurdy (Weston, Mass.) who tallied a season high three goals. With the win, Babson improves to 6-2 on the season while Drew drops to 3-6.

Sunday’s game was also played as a part of the Friends of Jaclyn Week 2010. Prior to the game, the Babson women’s lacrosse team had an official adoption ceremony to welcome Daisy Locke as the newest member of their team. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization that improves the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors.  The foundation matches a child with a college or high school team and the team then “adopts” the child as an official member. Along with the adoption, the Babson women’s lacrosse team sold Friends of Jaclyn t-shirts and accepted donations with all proceeds going to the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.

Drew came out strong scoring the first two goals of the game taking the early 2-0 lead just two minutes in. Babson first-year Jamie Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) then put the Beavers on the board at the 26:35 mark with a free-position goal. The teams then traded the next four goals before Drew went on to score another three unanswered goals to end the half with the 7-3 lead. Four of Drew’s seven first half goals came from junior Stacie Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.).

The Beavers came out of halftime and went on a 6-0 run to give them the 9-7 with 11:17 left in the half. Senior captain Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored the goal to tie the game 7-7 with a free-position shot and junior Alyssa Hood (Newport, R.I.) gave the Beavers their first lead of the game when she dodged two Drew defenders to put Babson up 8-7 with 14:16 left.  From that point on Babson never trailed as they went on to win, 12-11.

Babson was led by McCurdy who finished with three goals. Spang, Hood, Pettengill and senior captain Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) each finished with two goals apiece.
