Field Hockey Takes Down Eventual Division III National Champions in Late September Showdown

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute and sophomore Deirdre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.) made seven of her nine saves in the second half as the then-second-ranked Babson College field hockey defeated then-seventh-ranked Middlebury College, 2-1, in a top-10 showdown on September 24.

The Panthers jumped in front on a goal by Grace Jennings less than four minutes into the game and nearly doubled their advantage moments later only to see Barry deny Jennings on a breakaway attempt. The Beavers pulled even on sophomore Kate Driscoll's (Milton, Mass.) goal in the 29th minute and then took the lead for good on a blast by Tango following a penalty corner at the 49:10 mark.

The Green and White withstood a furious Middlebury push over the final 17 minutes that included 10 shots and nine penalty corners. Barry made back-to-back saves and got a defensive stop from junior Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) during a 54th-minute flurry, and turned away one final chance in the waning seconds to close out the win.

The triumph over the Panthers, who went onto win their final 16 games en route to claiming the Division III national championship, was one of three one-goal victories over a top-10 opponent in September for Babson. The Beavers went unbeaten in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play for the second year in a row and captured their third consecutive regular season league title on the way to making a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
