No. 6 Field Hockey Shuts Down MIT in NEWMAC Opener, 2-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) scored her second game-winning goal this week as sixth-ranked Babson College downed previously unbeaten MIT, 2-0, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. 

With the win, Babson improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while MIT falls to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC. 

It was a scoreless first half with the Beavers having the edge in both shots (13-1) and penalty corners (3-2). First-year Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.) of MIT recorded 11 first-half saves to keep Babson off the board.

The Green and White finally broke through in the 49th minute when Roche found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. Sophomore Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) played a thru ball into space for Roche, who buried the breakaway chance for a 1-0 advantage. 

Babson continued its offensive pressure and tacked on an insurance goal in the 68th minute as Drakeley converted a feed from junior Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers' defense kept the ball on the Engineers' side of the field for much of the afternoon, and finished with a 22-4 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Sophomore goalie Deirdre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.) was forced to make just one save while recording her third shutout of the year. for the Green and White. Moore ended with a career-best 14 stops for MIT.

Both teams return to action this week as Babson heads to Union on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start, while MIT hosts No. 2 Tufts Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 27-15 all-time against MIT and have shutout the Engineers in each of their last three meetings.
• Saturday's shutout was the eighth straight against a conference opponent for the Green and White, which has not allowed a goal to a league foe in over 497 minutes.
• The Green and White is 5-0 on the season while leading at the half, and 47-1 since 9/21/13.
• Babson has won its last seven NEWMAC openers.
• Barry, who has 15 shutouts in 29 career starts, is now just one away from tying Jen Archambault's '94 program record.
