After leading the Babson College women's basketball team to a program-record 28 wins and its first-ever trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament, sophomore forward Nicki Wurdeman capped off her incredible season by earning All-America Honors from multiple organizations this winter. Wurdeman was named Third Team All-America by D3hoops.com and Honorable Mention All-America by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in conjunction with State Farm. Wurdeman's national honors come after a brilliant season that saw her average 15.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 59.0 percent (186-315) from the field, 45.7 percent (16-35) from three-point range, and 68.6 percent (83-121) from the free throw line. The New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) announced its annual award winners on Tuesday, and head coach Judy Blinstrub and sophomore forward Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) were each honored. Blinstrub was named the 2009-10 NEWBA Coach of the Year, while Wurdeman received All-New England First Team recognition. Blinstrub was named NEWBA Coach of the Year for the second time in her illustrious career. Under her direction, the Beavers closed out the season with a record of 28-4 - the most wins in program history - and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sectional Finals for the first time ever. Wurdeman was named NEWBA All-Region for the second straight year after earning Second Team honors as a first-year. Babson College was within three points of national number one Amherst College with 11 minutes left in the second half, but the Lady Jeffs were simply too strong down the stretch as they defeated the Beavers, 80-65, in the Sectional Finals of the 2010 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. With the win, Amherst (31-0) advances to its second straight National Semifinal in Bloomington, Illinois, while the Beavers see their spectacular season come to a close with a record of 28-4. Babson received a magnificent performance from sophomore forward Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.), who scored a career-high 27 points while shooting 10-for-16 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free throw line. The second-year standout also contributed eight rebounds, two blocked shots, two assists, and three steals. Fellow sophomore forward Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) shot 6-for-10 from the floor to finish with 14 points for Babson, while first-year center Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.) amassed eight points, five boards, two blocks, and two steals.
