Women's Hoops Pulls Away From Coast Guard, 76-47

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- First-year Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) led all scorers with 18 points to go with her game-high seven rebounds as Babson outscored Coast Guard 22-3 to end the first half en route to a 76-47 win in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday.

Coast Guard took a 19-18 lead on a basket by senior Chanel Lee with 5:56 left in the first half before Babson scored 22 of the final 25 points in the half . The Beavers used full court pressure late in the period to force Bear turnovers on six straight possessions. Coast Guard eventually finished the session with 20 turnovers on 16 Babson steals. The Beavers scored nine straight taking a 27-19 lead with 3:13 left in the half and took a 40-22 lead into the break.

First-year Nicole Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Becky Bowman (Melrose, Mass.) each added 16 points for Babson (16-7, 9-2) which won its sixth straight contest to set up a pivotal showdown with first-place WPI next Wednesday.

Junior Melissa Martinelli led Coast Guard (4-18, 3-8) with 17 points while Lee, the only senior on the team, had a game-high eight rebounds in the final home game of her career.

Babson shot 51.6 percent from the field (32-62) while making one of five from 3-point range.  Coast Guard was 14 of 43 from the field (32.6 percent) while connecting on five of 22 from 3-point range. The Bears turned the ball over just once in the second half.
