WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's cross country teams battled warm temperatures and a challenging course to post strong results at the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams College on Saturday afternoon. In a field that featured many of the northeast's top teams, the men came in ninth and the women, who were competing in their first 6k race of the year, finished 21st on the Mount Greylock Regional High School course that will host the NCAA New England Championships in mid-November.
Senior Mark Gulesian (Miami, Fla.) was the Beavers' top finisher, posting a time of 26:55 to come in 20th overall. First-year Jonathan Miller (Valrico, Fla.) came in 85th with a time of 28:19, while junior Ian MacLean (South Hamilton, Mass.) finished 96th with a time of 28:27. Sophomore Will Nemeth (Coplay, Pa.) ran a time of 28:57 and first-year John Decker (Parkland, Fla.) came in with a time of 29:30 for the Green and White.
In the women's race, first-year Melanie Plattner (Fort Lee, N.J.) continued her strong rookie season, finishing as Babson's top harrier with a time of 26:44. Junior Kelli Halligan (Melrose, Mass.) posted a time of 27:13, followed by classmate April Goya (Oceanside, Calif.) and sophomore Jinane Gedeon Achi (Dubai, United Arab Emirates), who finished the 6k course in 27:45 and 27:46, respectively. First-year Sarah Anthony (Netcong, N.J.) was the Beavers' final scorer, coming in with a time of 28:29.
Babson will take next Saturday off before returning to action at the James Earley Invitational hosted by Westfield State University on October 11 at 11 a.m.
