NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's cross country teams got their first look at the course for November's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship meet when they competed at the Smith College Invitational on Saturday. The men, who were without their top four runners, came in seventh, while the women, who raced without standout senior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.), came in 15th in their half of the meet.
First-year Jonathan Miller (Westford, Mass.) was the Beavers' top finisher in the 8k, posting a time of 31:23.90 to come in 44th in his collegiate debut. Classmate Scott Atwood (West Newbury, Mass.) was 53rd with a time of 31:44.10, first-year Ryan Colaco (Danville, Calif.) finished 54th with a time of 31:44.50, and junior Chris deLeon (Princeton, N.J.) came in 56th overall with a time of 31:47.50.
On the women's side, first-year Melanie Plattner (Fort Lee, N.J.) posted the Green and White's top finish for the second meet in a row, finishing 83rd with a time of 23:05.10 in the 5k. Junior Kelli Halligan (Melrose, Mass.), who was making her season debut, came in 98th with a time of 23:49.60, while first-year Sarah Anthony (Netcong, N.J.) posted a time of 24:22.20. Sophomore Jinane Gedeon Achi (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) finished in 26:08.90, and classmate Rebecca Jacobs (Toronto, Ontario) came in with a time of 28:54.90.
Both teams will take next weekend off before returning to action at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on September 20 at 11:30 a.m.
