Men's Tennis Upends Coast Guard in NEWMAC Semifinals, 6-0

Beavers Match Single-Season Record for Wins, Advance to Seventh Consecutive NEWMAC Final

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Alberto De Mendiola (San Jose, Costa Rica) and sophomores Andre Libnic (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Chris Kolesnik (Staten Island, N.Y.) were all victorious in singles and doubles to help second-seeded Babson College defeat the third-seeded Coast Guard Academy, 6-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal action on Wednesday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Complex.

With its seventh consecutive victory, Babson improved to 14-4 and matched a single-season program record for wins while advancing to its seventh straight NEWMAC Tournament final. Coast Guard sees its year come to a close at 8-8.

Despite trailing early in all three matches, the Beavers rallied for a sweep in doubles. De Mendiola and Libnic won 8-6 at number one, Kolesnik and senior Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) fought off Bears' sophomores Kyle Fager (Spokane, Wash.) and Chris Lansing (Manlius, N.Y) 8-7 at number two, and junior Dylan Pace (Atherton, Calif.) and first-year Tyler Zhang (Northborough, Mass.) posted an 8-4 victory at number three.

Libnic picked up Babson's first singles point with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Fager at number two, and Kolesnik secured the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over senior Jack Phillips (Raleigh, N.C.) at number four. De Mendiola recorded the final point of the contest at number one with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Coast Guard senior Tom Hackett (Corpus Christi, Texas).

Rosenbluth took the first set and was up 3-2 in the second at number three singles, while Zhang won the opening set and has jumped out to a 2-1 lead in set two when the match was halted. First-yar Lucas Arora (Cornwall, N.Y.) was just a game away from victory at number six for the Bears.

Babson returns to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. when it travels to MIT for the conference tournament final.

• Babson has won six of eight NEWMAC Tournament matches against the Bears, which includes semifinal victories in each of the last four seasons.

• Rosenbluth's win at number two doubles was the 101st of his career.
