First-year Standout Collects Program's First ITA Rookie of the Year Honor
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Following a terrific first-year campaign that saw him earn national rankings in both singles and doubles, Babson College standout Alberto De Mendiola (San Jose, Costa Rica) was selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Rookie of the Year earlier this summer.
De Mendiola, who earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player and Rookie of the Year honors in May, went 13-4 at number one singles and 14-6 in all singles matches. Additionally, he paired with sophomore Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) to go 12-3 at number one doubles as the duo finished the year ranked 21st in Division III by the ITA.
The first ITA Northeast Rookie of the Year in program history, De Mendiola went 3-1 in singles play against nationally-ranked foes, including victories over Tyler Barr of MIT and Carl Reid of Colby. De Mendiola finished the season with an 11-2 mark against Division III opponents and was 32nd in the ITA singles rankings.
The Beavers finished the 2016-17 campaign at 11-9 overall after falling to MIT in the NEWMAC Tournament championship match.
