Batty Named Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College Senior Director of Athletics and Athletic Advancement Mike Lynch announced the hiring of Rocky Batty as the new head men's lacrosse coach on Wednesday. Batty replaces Brendan Gorman, who resigned in May after leading the program for nine seasons.

Well respected and with over 25 years of head coaching experience, Batty comes to Babson after serving as an assistant coach at Division I Boston University. He was involved in all facets of the program for the Terriers, who reached the Patriot League Tournament semifinals following an upset of nationally-ranked Bucknell University.

"Rocky's wisdom, experience and collaborative skill can help him thrive at Babson," said Lynch.  "I have been very impressed with his path to this opportunity, his energy, and the enthusiasm he has for lacrosse. He owns a stellar reputation and coaching record, is a person and coach who shares our values, and will put the student-athletes and their experience above all."

Prior to his stint at Boston University, Batty spent 10 seasons as the boys' varsity lacrosse coach at Wellesley High School. He posted an overall record of 148-63 while leading the Raiders to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association (MIAA) State Tournament 10 straight times between 2008-17.

Batty guided Wellesley to an undefeated regular season in 2011 and the Eastern Massachusetts Division II championship game in 2012. During his tenure, over 40 players went on to play lacrosse in the collegiate ranks.

"I couldn't be more excited about this opportunity," stated Batty. "I'd like to thank Mike Lynch and the entire search committee for their hard work, and for offering me the chance to lead such a terrific program. I'm indebted to Ryan Polley, Drew Marrochello, and all of the outstanding folks I worked with at BU, as well as to John Brown and his staff at Wellesley High School. Babson is a special place and I wouldn't be here without the support of my family, my friends, former players and coaches, and all of the great lacrosse people I've been lucky to be around through the years. I'm also very thankful to coach Al Brown for giving me my first stick, introducing me to lacrosse, and instilling in me passion and respect for this great game."

"Babson men's lacrosse will be accountable to show grit, toughness, love of family, and empathy in all that we do. We will work every day to be better on the field, to be committed in the classroom, and to impact our community for the better. Our program has a strong history behind us and outstanding opportunities ahead. I'm excited to get on campus to get started."

A 1991 graduate of Brown University, Batty played defense for the Bears before beginning his coaching career at Brookline High School in 1992, where he served as the boys' varsity head coach from 1999-2006.

What others are saying about Coach Batty:

"This is an exciting opportunity for Rocky and Babson. I've watched Rocky grow since his playing days at Brown. With his 25+ years of coaching and teaching high school students before his work at BU, Rocky brings mentorship experience, wisdom and awareness of what motivates young, lacrosse playing students. He will recruit, lead outstanding young people and help Babson lacrosse continue its rise to the top. I look forward to welcoming Rocky into the Division III New England lacrosse family. I will root for him every day but one."
-Peter Lasagna, Bates College head men's lacrosse coach

"We couldn't be happier for Rocky and think Babson hit a home run with this hire. Although he was only with us this past year, he made a lasting impact on our program and our players. Coach Batty has been in coaching for more than twenty years, and his poise and calming influence on a group of college-aged men was felt in high pressure situations and helped keep our program grounded. He's one of the real good guys in the sport of lacrosse and we know he's going to do great things at Babson. "
-Ryan Polley, Boston University head men's lacrosse coach

"I am very excited to hear that Rocky has been selected as the new head coach at Babson. Rocky has been an enthusiastic student of the game since his days playing for me at Brown. He is a really good person and everyone in the Babson community will thoroughly enjoy getting to know him. This is an inspired choice by Babson and Rocky will do a great job...congrats all around."
-Dom Starsia, former University of Virginia head men's lacrosse coach

"Rocky has been successful as a coach due to his dedication to the young people he has guided. He always puts the relationships he has with his athletes and staff at the forefront. In addition, Rocky has that relentless thirst for knowledge, learning as much as he can about the game every chance he has."
-Lars Tiffany, University of Virginia head men's lacrosse coach
