BABSON PARK, Mass.--No. 15 Bates College scored three unanswered goals over the final nine minutes to rally past Babson College, 10-8, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field.
Babson slips to 1-1 on the year with the loss, while Bates moves to 2-0 for the second year in a row.
Senior Connor Flaherty (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) had two goals and sophomore Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. First-year Kevin Klempner (Stuart, Fla.), who won 4-of-8 face-offs, led all players with two assists, while junior Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) contributed game highs of six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the loss. First-year goaltender Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) turned away 15 shots in his first career start.
Senior Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) led the Bobcats with three goals and one assist, while classmates Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) and Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) both scored twice. Fellow senior Sam Francis (Newburyport, Mass.) won 13-of-19 face-offs and classmate Charlie Gravina (Fair Haven, N.J.) tied for team honors with five ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory.
The Green and White jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Dillon and sophomore Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) just 2:20 into the contest. Bates pulled even on a tally by senior Jake Walsh (Baltimore, Md.) late in the first quarter, and the teams traded markers in the second quarter to go into the break deadlocked at 5-5.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the game on senior Scott Baber's (Pound Ridge, N.J.) goal 4:12 into the third quarter, but senior Matthew Logan (Downington, Pa.) and Flaherty responded with back-to-back tallies just 23 seconds apart to put Babson back in front 7-6 at the 7:41 mark. Melvin tied the game with 5:00 left in the stanza, but Flaherty buried a feed from first-year (Vienna, Va.) as the Beavers regained an 8-7 edge going to the fourth quarter.
Fay tied the game off an assist from Melvin with 8:37 to go, and then set up Melvin for the go-ahead strike following a turnover just over two minutes later. Bates sophomore goaltender Mitchell Drake (Annapolis, Md.) denied a shot by Flaherty with a little over five minutes to play, and Weber added an insurance goal with 21 seconds remaining following an offsides call for the final margin.
Drake made 12 of his 13 saves over the first three quarters for the Bobcats, who finished with a 42-38 edge in shots. Bates also won 14-of-22 face-offs and finished with a 40-30 advantage in ground balls.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they visit Union at 1 p.m., while Bates hosts Wesleyan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
- Babson is now 4-2 against Bates going back to 1979, although the teams had not played since 1990 prior to Wednesday.
- Aranalde made 11 of his career-high 15 saves in the third and fourth quarters for the Beavers.
