Brazel's 2OT Winner Helps Men's Ice Hockey Outlast Skidmore in NEHC Quarterfinals
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) jammed home a rebound 10:26 into the second overtime to help third-seeded Babson College defeat sixth-seeded Skidmore College, 3-2, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Tournament quarterfinal on February 17 at the Babson Skating Center.
Brazel's goal came following a scoreless stretch of over 42 minutes and ended the Beavers' longest playoff game since 1986, when it outlasted Merrimack in double overtime. Junior Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) and senior Zach Phelps (Manorville, Pa.) both scored, while junior Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.) made 43 saves in the win.
Munichiello gave Babson a 1-0 lead with his power play goal just 1:35 into the contest. The Thoroughbreds scored twice in the second period to take their first lead, but Phelps made it 2-2 with a wrist shot 8:30 into the third period. The Beavers outshot Skidmore 11-6 in a scoreless first overtime, and ended the marathon just past the midway point of the second extra frame when Brazel cleaned up the rebound of a shot by first-year Brendan Casey (Glastonbury, Conn.) at the top of the crease.
