Men's Ice Hockey Runs Unbeaten Streak to Five with 2-1 Win at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine—Junior Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal at 12:03 of the second period to help visiting Babson College defeat the University of Southern Maine, 2-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Babson, which has won three straight games and is unbeaten over its last five contests, is now 12-7-2 overall and 9-4-1 in conference play. Southern Maine, which snapped a five-game winless streak on Friday night, is now 7-11-2 overall and 4-9-1 in the NEHC.

Senior Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) also scored for the Beavers, who got assists from McMorrow, senior Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.). Classmate Bryan Botcher (Mequon, Wis.) made 12 of his 22 saves in the third period to earn his seventh victory of the season.

Junior Alex Pantalone (Hudson, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the game for the Huskies, who got 27 saves from classmate Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.).

Pantalone notched his fourth tally of the year at 14:49 of the first period to give Southern Maine a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short lived however as Phillips notched his fifth goal of the season just 52 seconds into Babson's only power play to pull even at 17:58 of the first.

Shapiro made a number of huge saves in the early portion of the second period to keep the game deadlocked before McMorrow beat him for his second goal of the year at the 12:03 mark. The Huskies held a 12-6 edge in third-period shots and had the only power play of the stanza following a tripping call with 4:00 left, but Botcher and the Beavers' defense stood tall to collect their sixth one-goal win of the year.

Babson returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts second-ranked Norwich, while Southern Maine will take on Bowdoin on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
