BABSON PARK, Mass.—On the heels of a historic victory at Middlebury's Duke Nelson Invitational in mid-September, the Babson College men's golf program cruised to its fourth consecutive New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship at Wachusett Country Club on October 1.
Led by a 3-under par 69 by sophomore Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.), the Beavers shot 2-under as a team and opened a 23-shot lead after the opening round on the way to finishing 34 shots clear of Springfield. Bornhorst, who earned NECC Golfer of the Year honors for the second year in a row, posted a 36-hole total of 1-under 143 to finish four shots ahead of first-year teammate Reed Wilson (Redlands, Calif.). Wilson posted rounds of 70-77 to finish at 3-over while becoming the program's fourth straight conference rookie of the year.
Sophomore Martin Jensen (Bronxville, N.Y.) came in third at 4-over par, junior Lukas Linemayr (Hampton, N.H.) placed sixth at 7-over, and first-year Lane Bohman (Chatham, Mass.) finished seventh at 8-over as the Green and White placed all five of its competitors on the all-conference team for the second year in a row.
Despite the NECC losing its automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, the 2017-18 campaign was a historic one for the Beavers. In addition to winning at Middlebury for the first time in school history, Babson posted victories at the Blazer Invitational in early October, and the Bentley Invitational and Tim Brown Invitational over a five-day period in late April. The Green and White broke 300 as a team in nine of 19 competitive rounds and finished the year with a 300.20 team scoring average.
